Group/Meeting General Information

ABC GROUP

The ABC group originated in the summer of 1987 through a 12th-step call. Two A.A. members went to talk with someone about alcoholism and agreed to return in a few days. In the interim, the parents of this prospective alcoholic offered the use of their home to meet. Before long, regular meetings were held at this home, and the group named themselves the “Shiftworkers.”

Over time, the group moved to accommodate its growing membership, meeting in a church basement and even over a pool hall. In 1987, the group became officially known as the ABC Group, reflecting the “three pertinent ideas” at the end of How It Works. The group moved to the Newnan Club on Perry Street in 1991 and remained there until it closed in 2020. The ABC Group now belongs once again to the revitalized Newnan Club at its current location.

WOMEN’S MONDAY NIGHT BOOK STUDY GROUP

This group originated in a member’s home and moved to the Newnan Club shortly after it opened. This is a women-only meeting that emphasizes a thorough study and discussion of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous while enjoying the fellowship of other women in recovery.

EL GRUPO SERENIDAD Y PROPOSITO

Recently formed to expand language options for those seeking recovery, this group offers an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in Spanish.

TURIN LOST & FOUND

The Turin Lost and Found Group was founded in 1996 by Sally H. The first meetings were held in the Turin Community Center, and some of the earliest members are still active in the group today!

Over the years, Turin has moved to different locations, sometimes even returning to previous ones. The group has held meetings at the United Methodist Church, the local Masonic Lodge, and even a small side building of the Methodist Church. Attendance fluctuated at times, and during some years, only a few members showed up consistently.

Despite these struggles, the Turin Lost and Found Group always survived. Eventually, they found stability in both location and attendance, staying at the United Methodist Church for many years.

Currently, the group has a robust membership, including many long-term sober members (both men and women), as well as consistent attendance from newcomers. In January 2025, the group voted to move to the Newnan Clubhouse due to scheduling changes at the church and increasing costs. However, they say:

“We are appreciative of the new location and know that no matter where we meet, as long as we keep the group together, the Turin Lost and Found Group will remain the ‘Turin Lost and Found Group.’”

WE CARE GROUP

The We Care group has a long history in Newnan of providing solid recovery support for those needing a meeting later in the evening—a time that can be particularly difficult for those in early sobriety. Meetings include general recovery discussions, Big Book study, and discussions based on the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions text.

11th STEP MEETING

The 11th Step Meeting was started at the Newnan Club. It begins with quiet meditation and is followed by a discussion of the 11th step and its principles.

ALL WELCOME MEETING

This meeting originated at the Newnan Club. It is an open discussion meeting that, as the name suggests, welcomes everyone. The discussion topics emphasize experience, strength, and hope as they relate to alcoholism.

PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE MEETING

This meeting also began at the Newnan Club. Discussions at this open meeting focus on the Twelve Principles that align with each of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Primary Purpose group was founded on the 5th Tradition, which states that each group has a primary purpose: to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers. Big Book discussions, speaker meetings, and panels on literature and recovery topics emphasize recovery and the tools members use to stay sober.

AL ANON

This meeting is a 12-step mutual support group for people who have been affected by a loved one’s alcoholism.
